Model Features
Simulation Engine
PLEXOS for Power Systems ® is a proven simulation tool that uses cutting-edge data handling and mathematical programming, and stochastic optimization techniques to provide a robust analytical framework for power market analyses. PLEXOS meets the demands of power market participants and analysts with a comprehensive range of capabilities.
By utilizing our patented technology, proprietary algorithms and our unrivaled expertise, PLEXOS Solutions is able to provide superior fundamental data, models and market intelligence.
Transmission Models
PLEXOS' models rely on real-time scrapes from various ISO and RTOs and from proprietary historical databases of archived transmission flows and capacities.
Current scrapes are archived each day to the firm’s historical databases, providing WECC Term clients a continuously updated, and comprehensive, source of US and Canadian transmission flows and capacities.
Modeling Data
Models and Forecasts utilize real-time data such as gas prices, hydro and wind generation, system loads, outages, snowpack, reservoir elevation levels and river flows.
Dynamic Wind
Using PLEXOS Solutions’ proprietary technology, wind-speed forecasts are converted into hourly wind-generation forecasts. Updated on a nightly basis to take into consideration the latest wind-speed forecasts, the generation forecasts are made available every morning before market opening.
These forecasts are a huge improvement over static wind profiles which do not incorporate real-time information. An up-to date dynamic wind generation forecast will allow market traders and ISO / utility operators to anticipate swings of up to several thousand megawatts in wind generation and the corresponding impact on market prices.
Fuel Prices
Fuel prices change continuously. Fuel cost is a function of the underlying commodity price and the delivery costs to its point of consumption. PLEXOS assumes a daily constant delivery cost (basis) and a dynamic commodity price. Basis is, therefore, computed once each day, at the end of the market. The commodity price is captured in the real-time and the delivered price is updated continuously. The PLEXOS fuel price module recomputes delivered fuel prices many times throughout the day.
